FAQ - Avon Grove Youth Basketball

The following is a list of questions that the coaches are frequently asked. Hopefully your question is listed here:

Q: How much does it cost to participate?
A: For a calendar year the cost is typically around $350. This includes approximately $125 for Malvern League fees for each season that we participate (typically summer and winter), uniforms, insurance, and equipment.

Q: Your team is described as a "travel" team. How far do you travel?
A: We participate in the Malvern League. Malvern League games are held at various gyms throughout the West Chester area. Teams may decide to travel to other tournaments.

Q: Does my son have to participate in both the summer league and winter league? (Can my son skip the summer league and only play winter?)
A: Players are required to play in the summer in order to have a spot in the winter. Occasionally players drop out after the summer season and we have an open spot for the winter. But this is generally a rare occurrence.

Q: My son plays baseball/lacrosse and his schedule may conflict with basketball. How does this affect my son's ability to participate with the basketball league?
A: Most of our players play at least one other sport. During baseball/lacrosse (or other sport) season we encourage players to make that sport their first priority. We also need players to be at as many basketball events as possible. We simply ask players to participate as much as possible and communicate with the coach. Players are not penalized for playing another sport and making it a priority during that season. We do expect basketball to take first priority during basketball season (winter).

Q: How many teams does your organization carry?
A: Generally we plan to carry a 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade team.

Q: How many players make each team?
A: Generally we carry 10 players per team.

Q: What's the time commitment?
A: During the summer and winter we try to hold two practices a week (each practice is typically 2 hours). During the summer there is typically 1 or 2 games a week. During the winter we have one game on Saturday or Sunday.

Q: When and where are practices held?
A: We typically practice Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays. When school is in session we try to hold practices either at AGIS or the middle school (preferably the middle school). In June and July we don't have access to gyms so we find a park or other suitable place to practice, but the practices are outdoors. In the winter we resume practices at either AGIS or the middle school, again with practices on Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays. For those football players out there, we do not play basketball during football season. We take a break from July 31st until early November.

Note: if your question is not listed here, please contact one of the coaches. We are always trying to improve our list of FAQs, so please submit any questions not answered here.
